Streetsboro tops Roosevelt 5-2 behind strong performances from Wilson & Long

KENT, OH- The Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders welcomed in the Streetsboro Rockets for a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening. The Rough Riders were looking to build some momentum with their third straight win while Streetsboro looked to bounce back from a tough loss to Cloverleaf on Wednesday. Lefty Ryan Sanders would get the start on the mound for Roosevelt opposed by the Rockets Scott Wilson. The Rockets would pull away in the 5th and take this one 5-2.

The Rockets would get started with three runs in the 1st. After Scott Wilson reached second base on an error to start the game, Brady Long ripped an RBI single scoring Wilson to put Streetsboro up 1-0.

After a strikeout, Jack Batten singled and came home on an RBI double by Jayden Coffie.

They would add the third run on a Nate Estep sacrifice fly giving them a 3-0 lead after a half inning.

Roosevelt was able to put two runners on against Wilson in the bottom half on a walk and a single by Teddy Maccarone but were unable to answer back. The Rockets led 3-0 after one.

After Sanders retired the Rockets in order in the top of the 2nd, they would push a run across on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher Wilson that scored Rocco Baggetta from third as they cut the deficit to 3-1 after two.

Both teams would go in order in the 3rd. Jack Batten led off inning four with a double but was stranded at second after Sanders was able to retire the next three batters. In the bottom half the Rough Riders were able to add another run. A one out single by Deonne Dickerson followed by a walk to Baggetta put runners at first and second with one out. Nick Roberts then smacked a line drive single past first base scoring Dickerson. Kent trailed 3-2 after four.

Streetsboro would answer back in the top of the 5th. Colton Cox led off with a bunt single. After the next two batters were retired, Brady Long ripped a double to the left centerfield gap scoring Cox making it 4-2. Brett Epple then reached on an error after his ground ball went under the second baseman’s glove allowing Long to score. The Rockets two big insurance runs put them up 5-2.

Roosevelt would threaten against Wilson in the bottom of the 6th. After a pair of strikeouts to start the inning, John Estep reached on an error and Luke Haney was hit by a pitch putting two on. Wilson was able to induce a ground ball out to end the threat.

After a quiet top of the 7th the Rough Riders had one more opportunity. After Wilson struck out the first to batters, Maccarone was hit by a pitch. Wilson was able to end the game on his 10th strikeout of the game and secure the complete game 5-2 win over Roosevelt.

After struggling early, Wilson put together a quality start going all 7 innings allowing only the 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 10 for his 3rd win of the season. Brady Long went 3/4 with 2 RBI while Jack Batten also chipped in with three hits.
