Crestwood uses 2nd half surge to take down Garfield 79-54 in D5 Sectional semifinal
MANTUA, OH- In front of a jam packed house at Crestwood High School on Wednesday night the Crestwood Red Devils welcomed in county rival Garfield in a Division V Sectional Semifinal. The two teams last met on January 31st at Hiram College with Crestwood winning a 61-57 thriller. There was much more at stake this time around as it was win or go home. After a close first half the Red Devils used a big 3rd quarter to propel them to a 79-54 win.
Crestwood would get off to a good start scoring nine of the first eleven points including a three ball from Michael Kalista to take an early 9-2 lead.

Following a Garfield free throw split, Kalista would splash another long ball putting them up 12-3. The G-MEN would answer back with a 8-0 run fueled by Devin Bates and Oliver Walker cutting the deficit to 12-11. After a Colton Mayle bucket for the Red Devils and a pair of G-MEN free thrown makes from Collin McGranahan, Jackson Mertz would end the 1st quarter scoring with a three for Crestwood putting them up 17-13 after one.
Joel Custer began quarter two for the Red Devils with a score and a foul but could not convert the free throw. The G-MEN would cut the deficit to one again after a McGranahan score and a Parker Gill corner three making it a 19-18 game.

A few moments late Mertz would sink another three followed by a Mayle score to push the Crestwood lead to 29-22. Devin Bates answered with a score inside and a foul converting the and-one opportunity cutting the Crestwood lead to 29-25.

Crestwood would outscore Garfield 6-3 the rest of the half and take a 35-28 lead into the break following a Joel Custer buzzer beater.

The Red Devils would come out of the break blazing as they put on a 9-0 run after back to back Mayle buckets and five straight from Kalista including his third three of the game put the Red Devils up 44-28.

After a McGranahan three for Garfield, Crestwood would roll of six straight for a 50-31 advantage. A few moments later they would take their biggest lead of the game at 60-36 following a Mayle jumper and a nice feed from him to Dinardo for the score inside.

They would hold a commanding 62-41 lead after three.
Garfield would get the deficit down to 16 a few minutes into the 4th quarter after another Bates and-one conversion and a Nate Grabowski jumper. After a Mayle bucket, McGranahan would hit his third three of the game cutting the deficit to 67-52. Crestwood would go on to outscore the G-MEN 12-2 the rest of the way for the 79-54 Sectional Semifinal win.
Colton Mayle led the way with 22 points. Angelo Dinardo had another double/double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Collin McGranahan led the G-MEN with 16 points.
Crestwood advances to the Division V Sectional Final on Saturday when they travel to #2 seed Chagrin Falls for a 1:00 tip.
