Crestwood outlasts Garfield 43-38 in opener at Price Gymnasium

HIRAM, OH- Saturday afternoon the annual Crestwood Red Devils vs Garfield G-MEN basketball event was held at Price Gymnasium on the campus of Hiram College. Four games including girls and boys junior varsity and varsity games.

Up first on the coverage schedule was the varsity girls matchup. Crestwood was looking for their fourth straight win while the Lady G-MEN looked to snap a two game skid. The Lady Devils withstood a 2nd half Garfield run to take home the 43-38 win.

Crestwood jumped out to a 5-2 lead before Riley Grace converted an and-one opportunity for Garfield knotting it up at 5-5. Crestwood would get three free throws from Katrina Richards followed by a free throw split by Kaelyn Tasker of the G-MEN to close the quarter with Crestwood up 8-6. A low scoring first quarter for both teams.

The Lady Devils opened quarter two with a Richards free throw split and a Grace Harper bank shot jumper for an 11-6 lead.

After back to back buckets by Mandy Cardinal and Kaelyn Tasker for the G-MEN, The Devils closed the half on a 10-0 run that saw the first three ball of the game from Madie Grace Gonzcy.

That 10-0 run gave Crestwood a 21-10 lead at the half.

Garfield would come out strong to start the 2nd half as Kylene McMayon scored back to back buckets to cut the G-MEN deficit to 21-14.

After a Becca Brady three ball for Crestwood, Mandy Cardinal scored five straight for Garfield which started a 12-2 G-MEN that ended with five straight from Cardinal once again making it a 26-24 game.

Madie Grace Gonzcy would end the run and the 3rd quarter with a three of her own to put Crestwood up 29-26 after three.

The Red Devils would open the 4th scoring the first six points to ending with a Katrina Richards layup for a 35-26 advantage.

Garfield would then score six straight cutting it back to a three point deficit after back to back Riley Grace buckets. A few minutes later Liv Martini would score consecutive buckets pushing it out to a 41-34 Red Devils lead with under a minute to play.

A pair of Cardinal free throws and a jumper by Kaelyn Tasker made it a three point game at 41-38 with under 30 seconds to play. The G-MEN were then forced to foul and the Red Devils had two free throw splits the rest of the way holding on for the 43-38 win.


Liv Martini paced the Red Devils with 12 points an 7 steals. Katrina Richards contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Mandy Cardinal led the G-MEN with 18 points'.

Crestwood looks to make it five in a row when they travel to Kirtland on 2/11 while Garfield looks to bounce back against Rootstown on 2/2.
