Aurora wins a 42-41 thriller over Roosevelt

AURORA, OH- Friday night hoops coverage took us to Aurora for a big Suburban League and Portage County matchup as the Aurora Greenmen (2-2) hosted the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders (1-4). It’s always a fun matchup when these two teams get together and tonight was no different. After a back and forth fourth quarter the Greenmen came up with the big shot and big defense at the end to come away with the big 42-41 win.

Aurora would jump out to an early 4-1 lead following a Johnny Trivisonno layup. Roosevelt would then go on a 15-2 run sparked by a three from John Estep and a tough score inside from Tyler Ellington drawing a foul.

That run would put the Rought Riders up 16-6. A Luke Hilditch three to end the 1st left the Rough Riders lead at 16-9 after one.

Cyler Foreman opened quarter two with a three for Roosevelt extending the lead back to ten at 19-9. Aurora would outscore them 7-2 the rest of the low scoring quarter cutting the Roosevelt lead to 21-16 at the half.

The Greenmen started the 2nd half slowly chipping away at Roosevelt. A Hilditch jumper followed by a Luke Bonnette score inside pulled Aurora within a point at 25-24. After a pair of Ellington free throws for Roosevelt, Gui Goedert went to work inside scoring back to back buckets at the rim to give Aurora a 28-27 lead, their first since early 1st quarter. Following an Ellington score, Nate Davis would drill a three for Aurora before an EJ Churn score tied the game up 31-31 after three.

The two teams would go back and forth exchanging buckets and tying the score on their first few possessions of the 4th. Back to back buckets by Goedert and Trivisonno put Aurora up 39-35.

Roosevelt would then go on a 6-1 run capped off by a big drive and score from Ellington to put the Rough Riders up 41-40 with just over 30 seconds left to play.

After a turnover by the Greenmen, they would force a big turnover by Roosevelt with 14 seconds to play. Johnny Trivisonno would then drive baseline inside for a big layup with 6 seconds remaining putting Aurora up 42-41.

Roosevelt would turn it over again and Aurora was able to run out the clock without a foul to close out the 42-41 win.

Gui Goedert led the way for Aurora with 14 points, 12 coming in the 2nd half, and 6 rebounds. Johnny Trivisonno chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Tyler Ellington led the Rough Riders with 15 points.

Aurora will look to keep it rolling when they travel to Willoughby South on 12/23. Roosevelt looks to bounce back on 12/23 at Hudson.
