Crestwood tops Garfield in a 61-57 thriller nightcap at Price Gymnasium

HIRAM, OH- The nightcap of the Crestwood Red Devils vs Garfield G-MEN Hiram College event saw the varsity boys square off in a thrilling battle. Both teams came into this one with 5-10 records looking to build some positive momentum as we head towards the postseason tournament. It was a back and forth game throughout with the Red Devils coming out on top 61-57.

The teams exchanged baskets to start the game. Following an Angelo Dinardo free throw split giving Crestwood a 3-2 lead, Collin McGranahan splashed a three for Garfield. After a Dinardo score inside off of a rebound, Oliver Walker scored inside and McGranahan hit another three for a 10-5 Garfield lead.

Garfield would hold a 15-7 lead late in the quarter before a pair of Joel Custer scores sandwiched around two Colton Miller free throws to end the quarter with the G-MEN leading 16-11.

The Red Devils would start the 2nd quarter by scoring six straight with four coming from Custer who had a game high 10 first half points. Crestwood took their first lead at 17-16. The lead would exchange hands for the next few minutes before a 7-2 Red Devils run gave them a 27-22 lead. Oliver Walker would score to end the 1st half for Garfield as they trailed Crestwood 27-24 at the break.

The G-MEN would start the 2nd half strong with an 8-1 run to take a 32-28 lead. Joel Custer would stop the run with a score and a foul. He could not convert the free throw leaving the score at 32-30.

Devin Bates would answer back for Garfield with three straight buckets including an and-one opportunity putting Garfield on top 38-30.

Crestwood would close it back to a two point deficit after back to back buckets from Dinardo and Custer. Oliver Walker then drilled a three for Garfield for a 43-38 lead.

Joel Custer was fouled on a three point attempt as time expired to end the 3rd quarter. He was only able to convert one of three making it a 43-39 G-MEN lead after three.

That brought on the thrilling and eventful 4th quarter.

Garfield held a slim lead for the first few minutes before Angelo Dinardo and Carter Jones each scored with Jones replacing Dinardo after he fouled out on the previous possession. That gave the Devils a 49-47 lead. Walker and Bates would answer for Garfield with Bates once again drawing a foul but unable to convert the free throw putting Garfield up 51-49.

Crestwood would then get a huge momentum shift from Colton Mayle as he hit back to back three’s to turn a two point deficit into a 55-51 Red Devils lead.

Garfield would punch right back. After a Nate Grabowski free throw split, Bates would get another score and foul for his third and-one opportunity of the 2nd half. He missed the free throw leaving the score at 55-54. McGranahan would split a pair of free throws to tie it up before Bates scored again inside for a 57-55 G-MEN lead. Custer and Jones would then score back to back putting Crestwood up 59-57 with under 20 seconds to play. Garfield could not convert on the other end and were forced to foul when Jack Patton and Michael Calista each split a pair for the final margin of 61-57 in favor of Crestwood.

Joel Custer led the way for Crestwood with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Colton Mayle had 13 points and those two big 4th quarter threes. Collin McGranahan topped Garfield with 16.

The Red Devils will look to make it three in a row when the travel to Berkshire on 2/6. The G-MEN will look to bounce back when they host Champion on 2/3.
