Pirates Prevail Over G-Men in MVAC Action 74-50
Palmyra Twp., OH - The final score doesn’t tell the whole story of the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference match-up Tuesday night between the Southeast Pirates and Garfield G-Men. While the final score shows a lopsided victory for the hosts, the first half was everything but that. Throughout much of the first 16 minutes it was a one possession game, with Garfield holding the lead for periods of time in the 2nd quarter.
From the opening tip, the intensity was high for both squads. It was Bradley Dillion leading the way for the Pirates with 8 through the games first quarter, but Garfield’s Parker Gill answered with 8 of his own as the Pirates held a slim 17-16 advantage after 8 minutes of action. In the 2nd it was Braedyn Walden with 8 to bring his total to 11 as the Pirates headed to the break with a 31-30 advantage. Gill led the way for the G-Men with 10 while Brandyn Bogucki, Oliver Walker, Nate Grabowski and Devin Bates chipped in with 5 a piece.
The Pirates looked like a completely different team coming out of halftime, rushing out to a 9-2 run led by Cohen Richardson who scored 8 in the quarter. For the quarter, the Pirates outscored the G-Men by a score of 24-7, taking what was a close game and blowing it wide open over the course of 8 minutes. Caden Dillion also chipped in 8 of his own in the quarter and the Pirates upped defensive intensity led to fast break points that ballooned their lead to double digits and they never looked back.
Richardson led all scorers with 15 points, while Bradley Dillion scored 14. Caden Dillion and Braedyn Walden rounded out the double digit scoring for the Pirates with 13 and 12 a piece respectively. It was Parker Gill as the high point man for the visitors with 14. The Pirates move to 10-2 on the year and 6-1 in MVAC play and will return to action on Friday when they travel to Champion while the loss drops the G-Men to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in MVAC action and they head to Liberty Friday evening to look to end their 5 game losing streak.
