Southeast Sinks the Ravens 65-28
Palmyra Twp. OH- The Lady Pirates welcomed a familiar foe that will only become more familiar in a few years with the newly announced Portage County Conference (official name TBD) to town on a brisk Monday evening. While the temperatures fell to the single digits outside Southeast High School, the Lady Pirates came out hot and didn’t slow down as the night progressed as they played host to the Lady Ravens of Ravenna.
Southeast was able to spread the ball around nicely throughout the evening, with multiple double-digit scorers and a few knocking on the door of double digits. Leading the way was Sophomore Lylia Lavigna with 16. Her high-water mark came in the 2nd quarter when she nailed both of the triples that she had on the evening and added two buckets from inside the arc as well to account for 10 of the team’s 17 in the 2nd quarter.
Senior Bailey Morris scored 5 of her 12 to lead the team in scoring in the opening frame, where they also netted 17. The 3rd quarter featured a steady diet of Lavigna, Morris, and Junior forward Jenna Canale. For the 8 minutes, Lavigna added 4 to her total, while Morris scored 7 and Canale added 6 of her 13 for the night. The 20-point quarter was enough to push the game to a running clock situation, allowing Head Coach Ashley Callihan the opportunity to empty her bench for the 4th.
Taking advantage of some additional offensive scoring opportunities was Freshman post Lauren Metzgar, who scored 6 of her 9 in the 4th quarter. Also closing in on double digits on the evening was Bella Mowery, who ended the night with 8 points.
For the visitors, it was Senior Post Jalysia Thompson leading the way with 16 points. Thompson also broke the Ravenna girls’ record for blocks in a season during the game, passing the previous high mark of 71.
The Pirates (11-6) return to action on Wednesday when they travel to take on Brookfield, while the Ravens’ (4-12) next game is scheduled for Wednesday evening at Woodridge.
